Sheepskin vs Cowhide Leather Jackets: What's the Difference?
Two leather jackets can look similar in a photo and feel completely different on your shoulders. At ZeeNest, most jackets are made from either sheepskin or cowhide, and the hide you choose affects the jacket's softness, weight, break-in time and how it ages. This guide compares the two so you can choose with confidence.
Sheepskin: soft and light from the first wear
Sheepskin (often called sheep skin on our product pages) has a finer grain and a naturally soft hand feel. A sheepskin jacket usually feels comfortable straight away, drapes closer to the body and weighs less than a comparable cowhide style. That makes it a strong choice for everyday city wear, travel and longer days in the jacket.
Many of our sheepskin styles use an aniline or semi-aniline finish, which keeps the surface looking natural. Our Men's Ionic Black Leather Jacket is a sheepskin example with a band collar and quilted viscose lining.
Cowhide: thicker, tougher and slower to break in
Cowhide is a thicker, denser hide with a more pronounced grain. It generally offers more abrasion resistance and structure, which is why it is a classic choice for biker jackets. A new cowhide jacket can feel firm at first and softens with wear, developing creases and, on pull-up finishes, lighter tones where the leather bends.
Our Men's Dean Brown Leather Biker Jacket uses cowhide with a pull-up finish, while several of our hooded and suede styles use cowhide for a more rugged look.
Side-by-side comparison
- Softness: Sheepskin is softer immediately; cowhide starts firmer and breaks in.
- Weight: Sheepskin is usually lighter; cowhide usually feels more substantial.
- Durability: Cowhide generally handles scuffs and abrasion better; sheepskin rewards gentler handling.
- Appearance: Sheepskin has a smoother, finer grain; cowhide has a stronger, more visible grain.
- Best for: Sheepskin for comfort and everyday wear; cowhide for structured biker styles and hard use.
What about suede?
Suede is not a different animal hide — it is the underside of a hide, brushed to create a soft, matte surface. Our suede bombers and biker jackets use sheepskin or cowhide suede. Suede needs a little more care around rain and marks, which we cover in our leather and suede care guide.
How to choose your jacket
Start with how you will actually wear it. If you want a lighter jacket you can wear all day, begin with sheepskin styles in our men's leather jackets and women's leather jackets collections. If you want a firmer, more protective feel, look at cowhide biker styles. Whichever hide you pick, check the product's own size chart before ordering — our leather jacket size guide explains how to measure your chest and sleeves.
