Leather and Suede Jacket Care: Cleaning, Drying and Storage
Begin with the sewn-in care label and the instructions supplied for your jacket. Smooth leather, suede, coatings and linings need different treatment. A product that suits one finish may mark another, so avoid treating every leather jacket in the same way.
Identify the material first
Check the product details for leather type, finish and lining. A smooth aniline leather jacket and a suede bomber may require different cleaning methods. If the label is missing or unclear, contact the retailer or a leather-care specialist before applying a cleaner. The Leather Working Group's care guidance also recommends getting advice specific to your product when care instructions are unavailable.
After everyday wear
- Empty the pockets and air the jacket in a ventilated place away from direct heat.
- For a suitable smooth finish, gently remove loose surface dust with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Do not scrub.
- For suede, use only a brush suitable for suede and follow the jacket's instructions. Check a concealed area first and avoid aggressive brushing.
- Keep perfume, hair products, oils and hand sanitiser away from the surface.
What if the jacket gets wet?
Do not put it on a radiator, use a hairdryer or tumble-dry it. Follow the care label, gently blot surface moisture where appropriate and let the jacket dry naturally on a supportive hanger. Heavy soaking, colour transfer or changes in texture are reasons to consult a specialist.
Cleaners and conditioners
Do not use household detergent, bleach or a generic leather conditioner on an unknown finish. Conditioners, oils and waxes can change colour or texture, particularly on suede. Use only products explicitly suitable for the jacket and follow both sets of instructions. Test on an inconspicuous area before broader use; for stains or uncertain results, stop and seek specialist advice.
Store without crushing
Use a broad hanger that supports the shoulders. Store in a cool, dry, ventilated space, away from sunlight. Avoid tight plastic covers and crowded rails that crease or press the jacket. Check it periodically rather than leaving it packed away while damp.
